News reports this morning (http://www.denverpost.com/nationworld/ci_8938393) say that John McCain is proposing a "Gas Tax Holidy" for the summer to "...stem the public's pain from a troubled economy." I'm not trying to take sides in the presidential campaign, but what a load of #*&%$#!
The federal gas tax amounts to 18.4 cents per gallon. For ease of math, let's assume you get 18.4 miles per gallon, so the tax costs you 1 cent per mile driven. According to the gov't, the average American drives 12 - 15,000 miles per year. McCain's proposal would remove the tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day (105 days). At 15,000 miles per year, that should be about 4,315 miles driven without tax - a savings of about $43.15.
Wow, that should stimulate the economy!
Oh, by the way... the Federal government would LOSE $10 Billion from the proposal, money that is used to maintain our roads and highways! Sorry, I'll forgo my $43 now so I don't pay way more in the future to fix the crumbling roads.
Just my opinion.
